Best Christmas Food Ideas 2025: Easy Recipes and Traditions

Introduction

Disclaimer: All recipes and traditions shared are from my personal family experience. These are our favorites that we make year after year!

There’s something magical about the foods that only come out during Christmas! Growing up, I could always tell it was officially the holiday season when my mom started making certain recipes that we only enjoyed once a year. The smell of cinnamon and sugar, the tradition of baking cookies together, the special breakfast on Christmas morning—these are the memories that make the holidays feel like home.

Now that I’m in college, I miss those family traditions more than ever, which makes me appreciate them even more when I’m home for the holidays. This year, I wanted to share some of our favorite Christmas recipes and the traditions that go along with them. Whether you’re looking for new recipe ideas, want to start your own traditions, or just love reading about how other families celebrate, I hope this gives you some inspiration! These aren’t fancy or complicated—they’re just real, delicious foods that bring our family together every year.

Our Christmas Morning Breakfast Traditions

I always remember Christmas morning being the most magical time. A blur of delicious food, wrapping paper, and kids running around like crazy. It is probably my favorite time. Christmas morning never starts too early because my family is a big fan of sleeping in.

But once everybody has awoken, we always start with breakfast. Presents come later. For the longest time, when it was just my immediate family, we would eat an egg casserole and cinnamon rolls with orange juice. My mom would prep the egg casserole the night before and the cinnamon rolls would typically just be the Annie’s or Immaculate brands.

Now, more of us gather together and we do cinnamon rolls but often homemade and other foods besides egg casserole. I believe this year we are also doing a smoked salmon board with salmon from Sea Bear Smokehouse. My family prefers having a large breakfast before presents takes up the whole morning and all of our energy. You really need to be charged up and ready for the entire event that it is.

To conclude breakfast, we always read the Christmas story. First we must fill our bodies to refuel and then we must fill our hearts with the truth to set up the rest of the day.

The egg casserole is one of the easiest things you can make and it saves so much time. My mom often puts some sort of veggies and sausage or bacon with cheese and it is so delicious. There are so many amazing things you can do to make an already crazy morning a little less stressful.

Classic Christmas Dinner Recipes We Make Every Year

Because my family always does a big breakfast, we never made a large Christmas dinner. Now that we are with extended family, they tend to like to cook so they often make some sort of spread. But often we end up just doing some sort of large charcuterie board with leftover brisket my uncle makes, another salmon board, and plenty of sweets.

I think a prime rib is being made this year by my grandma for dinner but honestly not sure. Typically, I am the main cook of the household but at Christmas time I sit back and let everyone else take the reins. The holidays are my time to rest and relax and I don’t spend time in the kitchen unless it is baking cookies or my famous pumpkin roll.

Christmas Baking and Cookie Traditions

I remember right after Thanksgiving, getting the Christmas tree, decorating it with a Christmas movie in the background, and sipping hot chocolate. This was the perfect start to the season and opened up for so many fun memories. After this moment, all the Christmas baking would begin.

We used to bake hundreds upon hundreds of cookies and deliver little boxes to neighbors and first responders. It was so much fun and truly added some holiday magic. Sugar cookies were my absolute favorite to make and we still use the same cookie cutter shapes to this day. I also love making chocolate peppermint crinkle cookies. One type of cookie that is not well-known is called skillet cookies and it is my grandma’s own recipe that was passed down.

My favorite thing – in the houses I’ve lived in that allow it – is to watch a Christmas hallmark movie from the tv while baking in the kitchen. It is the absolute best tradition.

It did make my sad because this year I was really looking forward to all the traditions coming home from college. But sadly, I didn’t get many opportunities to bake because I got sick and I got busy. But, these next couple days I am embracing all the traditions even if it means not baking just sitting and being present while someone else does. It really is just in the little things.

Holiday Drinks and Festive Beverages

When my family used to live in Washington State, I would always enjoy coming in from playing in the snow and drinking hot chocolate. Truly one of the best things you can do on a cold day. Now, regardless of the warmth or cold you will still find me drinking hot chocolate around Christmas time.

You don’t really need a recipe for hot cocoa but I always look up on pinterest some healthier versions. The best combos all have cocoa powder and chocolate melted in to get the creamiest combo.

Another fun drink is buying apple cider from the store and heating it up. To spice up the drink, put some cinnamon sticks in the hot cider while it is warming over the stove.

Last favorite holiday drink around the New Year is Martinelli’s sparkling cider. Such a fun way for the kids to celebrate with a fun drink. I also will always have an Olipop or a Poppi around the holidays because they are just the best but they also have fun holiday flavors. Olipop has an Apple Cider flavor and it is absolutely delicious and tastes like a healthy Martinelli’s.

Christmas Desserts Beyond Cookies

A recent addition to Christmas is my pumpkin roll which I make at Thanksgiving but it is so good so I felt I had to make it this holiday season. I will link the recipe I use because it is absolutely delicious. Here is my tried and true recipe: https://www.mamaknowsglutenfree.com/gluten-free-pumpkin-roll/

I also have a chocolate pecan pie that is gluten free and dairy free and literally blows minds. The recipe is not my own but it’ll be found on my upcoming recipe page. All of my favorite recipes that I have curated but also that run in my family will be found there.

Healthy(ish) Holiday Recipe Alternatives

My family is gonna be making almost everything gluten-free and dairy-free because certain family members now have restrictions. But that is okay because it is definitely doable. My grandma is making her famous sausage balls gluten-free and she always makes some with regular cheese and some with goat cheese.

All the cookies and desserts are going to be gluten-free along with dairy-free. This looks like using goat butter instead of regular cow’s butter. Now I know it isn’t technically dairy free but they can handle goat and sheep’s dairy. We also use things like Myokos vegan butter or Kite Hill vegan cream cheese.

We use gluten-free all-purpose flour instead of regular flour for all those who need it. Or certified gluten-free oats. My favorite brands are all listed on one of my other blog posts: https://foodngrace.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-the-best-gluten-free-alternatives-on-the-market-in-2025-transform-your-diet-today/

Conclusion

Christmas recipes and traditions are about so much more than just the food—they’re about the memories, the people, and the feeling of home. Whether you’re making recipes that have been in your family for generations or starting new traditions of your own, what matters most is that they bring you joy and connect you to the people you love.

I hope sharing our family’s favorites has inspired you to embrace your own holiday traditions or maybe even try something new this year. Remember, traditions don’t have to be complicated or perfect—they just have to be meaningful to you. As I’ve learned being away at college, sometimes the simplest traditions are the ones you miss the most. So this Christmas, savor those special foods, make those recipes with the people you love, and create memories that will last long after the decorations come down. Merry Christmas!
